Third Duck Farm in India Confirmed with Avian Flu
INDIA - H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a third village duck flock in the state of Kerala.The Indian veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 2 dated 3 December to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
It outlines a confirmed outbreak of high-path avian flu of the H5N1 subtype at Chennithala in the district of Alappuzha in the state of Kerala. This is the same district as one of the original outbreaks and it is reported to have started on the same day.
The outbreak started on 20 November in a village flock of 138,063 ducks. Of these, 2,554 birds died and 26,746 have been destroyed.
The source of infection is unknown.
The epidemiological investigation is ongoing and an intensive surveillance campaign has been launched in a 10-km radius of the outbreak.
