High-path Avian Influenza Hits Palestine

PALESTINIAN TERRITORY - A small backyard poultry flock in Jerusalem has been hit by an outbreak of H5N1 high-path bird flu.

In an Immediate Notification dated 24 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the veterinary authority reports a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a backyard flock of poultry in Jerusalem, West Bank.

Starting on 22 March, 25 of the flock of 40 five-month-old layers showed symptoms and 15 died. The remaining birds have been destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 variant of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been identified.

This is the first outbreak since mid-February 2015.
