THe Poultry Association of Zambia (PAZ) says that, despite the increase in feed prices, the poultry industry will remain the most affordable source of meat, reports Daily Mail.

In its weekly publication, the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) said the price of feed has been on the rise during the first quarter following an uptrend in prices of key ingredients as well as depreciation of the kwacha (ZMW) against other currencies.

However, PAZ national chairperson, Rhodnie Sisala, said that it is regrettable that there has been an increase in the price of key ingredients but he was optimistic that poultry products will still be affordable for most consumers.

He added: “Feed accounts for 75 per cent in the production of poultry products, either eggs or birds, hence the increase in the price of feed calls for concern. We foresee an increase in our products, but we are confident that it will be minimal and the industry will continue to offer a very affordable form of meat compared to other meat products.

“In terms of the pricing, the price of chicken is about ZMW25 to ZMW30 per kilogramme whereas if you compare it to beef, the cheapest form of beef is within the region of ZMW35 per kg. If you compare to pork and fish it is also in the same region.”

On the outlook, Mr Sisala said the sector is still likely to grow at a favourable pace due to the efficiency of poultry farmers in the country going into the second quarter.
