Newcastle Disease Returns to Costa Rica

COSTA RICA - After an absence of more that 25 years, Newcastle disease has returned to Costa Rica, affecting a backyard flock in the north-west of the country.

According to an Immediate Notification dated 28 April to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Costa Rican veterinary authority outlines a new outbreak of Newcastle disease.

Starting on 1 February 2015, 71 out of a backyard flock of 84 birds at Bella Vista in the state of Guanacaste showed signs of the died. Of these, 65 died and the rest of the flock was destroyed.

The report adds that the outbreak was in a backyard population in a rural area difficult to access near the northern border of the country.

The last outbreak of Newcastle disease in Costa Rica was in 1990.
