North Carolina State University research discovered that enterococcal spondylitis, also known as ‘kinky back’, is caused by enterococcus cerocum.

The organism travels through the bloodstream, attacking the vertebrae, after entering the broiler through the intestinal tract at an early age.

The US Poultry and Egg Association said: “Enterococcal spondylitis, usually called kinky back in the broiler industry, is an important cause of lameness and mortality in many broiler companies.”
