These are “bridge species” and also include migratory birds such as ducks and swans and shore birds like heron, egrets, curlews and plovers, said Accra Zoo’s manager, Dr Richard Suuire.

He said Tono irrigation dam was a strategic destination for these species, according to Modern Ghana, reporting from Ejisu in the Ashanti region.

Also at the event, FAO consultant, Dr William Amanfo listed wild birds, captive game birds, dead birds, poultry bought at markets, animal feed bad, fomites, water, feed and other farm animals as disease sources.

Tyres from trucks and soiled clothes, wheel barrows; egg and manure traders and farm equipment can all be a disease source, he added.

This is part of a drive to build competence of veterinary doctors and technical staff, following the disease outbreak in April this year.
