Another Bird Flu Outbreak in Myanmar
MYANMAR - There has been another outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in village poultry.The veterinary authority has sent Follow Up Report No. 1 dated 22 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
According to the report, the outbreak started on 19 February in Mingalardon in the Yangon region on the western side of the country. It occurred in a mixed flock of 126 birds (chickens and five ducks). Two of the birds died and the rest were destroyed.
The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
The report adds that during the surveillance activities, the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD) received dead chicken samples and information on an abnormal mortality in backyard chickens in Mingalardon township on 19 February 2010. Farmers raised backyard chicken and backyard ducks in the household. A detailed investigation is being carried out.
