Newcastle Disease Found in Chonan, S. Korea

SOUTH KOREA - Newcastle disease, a fatal poultry infection, has been found in Chonan, South Chungchong Province, just 4 kilometers from Asan, the site for the latest outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, officials said Monday.

According to the Chonan local government, about 10,000 chickens from a farm owned by a 48-year-old man identified by his last name Park died last Thursday and Friday after exhibiting respiratory and central nervous system problems.

Close inspection confirmed the cause of the deaths to be Newcastle disease, a highly contagious zoonotic bird disease.

About 15,000 chickens were being raised on Park’s farm. Since Thursday, the city government has taken measures to limit the movement of chickens from the farm, as well as transportation of vehicles to it.

On Sunday, quarantine officials completed the slaughter of the 5,000 remaining chickens from the infected farm.

In a related development, on Sunday, quarantine officials in Asan culled more than 4,000 pigs within a 500-meter radius of the site of the latest outbreak of bird flu and 2,000 chickens within a 3-kilometer radius of the site.

On the same day, Kyonggi province also slaughtered 62,000 chicks hatched from eggs from a farm infected by bird flu in Asan.
