Pakistan Reports New Outbreaks Of Bird Flu

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan authorities have today confirmed more cases of deadly bird flu according to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Quoting the report, a strain of bird flu has been found in chickens near the capital Islamabad and a city in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

The H5N1 virus has also been found in chicken flock in a house in the city of Rawalpindi and in a flock of peacocks in Mansehra, a main city in NWFP, Rafiq-ul-Hasan Chughtai, Commissioner Animal Husbandry said.

Chughtai said there is no report of the spread of the virus in any poultry farms anywhere in the country.

TV channels reported that all the chickens in the affected flock of some 40 birds at a house in Rawalpindi had died or been culled.

Poultry industry suffered huge losses when the bird flu hit chicken farms near Islamabad and several other parts of the country in March last year.
