Chicken prices in Barbados remain stable

From the second of April, poultry producers in Barbados experienced an increase in the price of feed.

That product now sells for just over 975 dollars per tonne up 25 dollars, or 1.7 percent.

This came on the heels of another increase last December of around 35 dollars per tonne.

Whilst the increase in December led to the price of chicken going up, on this occasion poultry producers have decided to absorb this latest hike.

President of the Egg and Poultry Producers Association, Carlyle Brathwaithe is warning Barbadians that Pinnacle Feeds has told farmers that this price can only be guaranteed up until June

He says after this there's every possibility that if the price of feed goes up again, Barbadians could be called upon again to pay more for chicken.

Mr. Brathwaithe says the industry is very concerned about the development stating that it's a situation over which they have no control.

He says the demand for corn which is a major ingredient in the feed is rising every day, so much so there's a serious shortage on the world market.
