Print This Page Egg industry probe reveals illegal operations
AUSTRALIA - A crackdown on north-west Tasmanian egg producers has uncovered an illegal operation.The investigation was sparked by last month's salmonella outbreak that was traced back to contaminated eggs from an approved producer, who has since been banned from selling eggs direct to the public.
Another two small producers have been provided with information on how to comply with animal welfare and environmental management requirements.
The Department of Primary Industries' food safety manager, Chris Lyall, says charges could be laid against the larger illegal operator in the next three weeks.
