Waste Disposal: Ash Exempt But Only if you Register by July
UK - New regulations covering agricultural waste must be in place by 15th May. The use of farm dump/tips, burning of materials such as plastics and packaging and spreading incinerator residues was outlawed in May 2006, and farmers have had 12 months to comply.Fortunately, after tough negotiations between industry groups and the Environment Agency, pig and poultry ash has been given an exemption. From today producers who incinerate carcasses and approved organic matter will be allowed to spread residual ash onto the land.
However, to comply with the law producers must register their exemption status with the Environment Agency by July 15 2007.
Registration is FREE and most exemptions will only have to be registered once.
Registration packs are available from the Environment Agency. Tel. 0845 6033113 or they can be completed on-line, using the Whole Farm Approach (WFA). This is designed to lighten the regulatory burden on farmers and growers in England by bringing together the information requests from Defra and its partners in one system.
