Chicken prices are set to see a northward movement. It would climb up by Rs 18-20 per kg as the production cost has gone up by more than 20 per cent," Poultry Federation of India (PFI) President Jagdish Singh Dhur told reporters.

Farm price of a live bird is currently between Rs 34-35 a kg and its cost of production amounts to Rs 36 a kg, Dhur said. The retail price of a live bird is around Rs 80 a kg.

Currently, dressed chicken is being sold between Rs 100 and Rs 120 a kg in Delhi. In Mumbai and Kolkata, the prices are between Rs 90-100 a kg, while they are lowest in the southern region, especially Bangalore where it costs Rs 70-80 a kg.

"The soaring rates of soyameal, which is the second key ingredient in the poultry feed after maize, has hit hard on the cost of production," Venkateshwara Hatcheries Group General Manager (Marketing) Vijay Tijare said.
