It is the second egg price hike in two months, as it increased by 96 cents per dozen last November. Medium table eggs will now cost $9.81 per dozen, large $10.41; extra large $10.81 and jumbo $11.31.

Table Egg Producers president, Kazim Khan said yesterday that members of his group met Wednesday night as they were informed that feed prices went up Tuesday.

“It was four hours of heated debate among farmers. Feed is 70 percent of our costs and its price has been on the increase continuously,” Khan noted.

Worse however, is that grain price projections (futures), do not look encouraging, since demand for corn, used to produce alternative fuel, ethanol, continues apace. Drought and floods across Australia, Asia and parts of Latin America have also severely affected crop yields.
