No Chicken in City Markets from Today

INDIA - From this morning, you will probably not get any chicken in the market.

Taking a cue from the Salt Lake municipality, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to stop all chicken being brought in from the districts to be sold in the city’s markets. That leaves only the government-run Tollygunge poultry, but it stopped supplies some time back.

KMC took the step after reports that chicken in some of the affected areas close to Kolkata like Budge Budge had disappeared before being culled. As a result, KMC has banned delivery of chickens from Budge Budge, Maheshtala, Joynagar, Baruipur and other adjoining areas in South 24-Parganas.

Kolkata police on Tuesday stepped up vigil at important entry points to the city, including Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Bridge.

In a meeting with civic bosses at the KMC headquarters, representatives of the World Health Organization instructed the KMC authorities to start a special drive in some areas of the city — like Garden Reach, Metiabruz and Behala — where backyard chickens are reared and sold to retail traders.
