Egg Throughput Falling

This follows the general decline in throughput over the last three years.

The most marked decline has been through packing stations in England and Wales that have seen a drop of nearly half a million cases over the last year, while throughput in Scotland has risen slightly.

Over the last three years, throughput of eggs from laying cages has fallen by more than a million cases and while there has also been a decline in production of barn and free range eggs, this has been taken up by the organic egg market.

The number of eggs going to processors has also declined, according to the figures produced by National Statistics for the UK Department of Environment Food and rural Affairs (Defra).
