‘Eggs-iting’ News in the UAE
UAE - Union Cooperatives in the UAE are going to import eggs directly from the Netherlands and the first lot will be available from February 15, Khaleej Times has learnt. They will also be selling the eggs at cost price, in a bid to bring down the prices of the much sought-after commodity in the market, Ibrahim Al Bahr, operations manager of the cooperatives, told Khaleej Times yesterday.
The prices of eggs had skyrocketed recently due to the shortage of the commodity in the local market following the outbreak of bird flu in Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan and other countries.
The Ministry of Economy had allowed direct import of eggs, said Al Bahr, adding that Union Cooperative’s first consignment would arrive soon and would be sold at the cost price in its outlets across Dubai and other emirates from February 15.
The imported eggs would be sold at the cost price of Dh14.50 for a tray of 30 eggs. Currently, Union Cooperative outlets are selling a tray of 30 eggs for Dh16, while other hypermarkers and retail outlets are charging Dh17-20.
