Farm at Centre of Salmonella Inquiry Named

AUSTRALIA - The poultry farm at the centre of a recent salmonella investigation in Tasmania has been named as Pitt Poultry.

The company has several farms providing eggs to caterers and restaurants.

More than 100 people fell ill during an outbreak of salmonella poisoning last month in Hobart, which has been traced back to eggs supplied by the Pitt Poultry.

According to reports from ABC News, the General Manager of Biosecurity Australia, Alex Schaap, said Pitt Poultry was forced to outsource its egg cleaning last year but the operation will not be shut down because the source of the salmonella bacteria still has not been pinpointed.

"Certainly we've had very good cooperation from the operators of the egg farm, we've spent an awful lot of time on the premises. We've made, required, a lot of changes to the production system, it's an exemplary operation at this point," Mr Schaap told ABC.
