Officials See a Way for Pilgrims Pride

US - Poultry processor, Pilgrims Pride, recently announced concerns for the future of three plants in El Dorado after poor returns were revealed.

Now, officials in Union County have stepped forward to say that they have known about the problem for months.

Pittsburg, Texas-based Pilgrim’s Pride told the 1,620 El Dorado workers last week that the plants need to demonstrate “immediate changes” if they are to stay open, reports the Texarkana Gazette.

They say on Monday, the company announced it would reduce weekly chicken processing by 5 percent in the second half of its fiscal year, which the company has begun.

The company said the reduction would help balance supply and demand at a time when feed costs are at record highs.

The company said it may close a plant and said El Dorado remained among those being considered. Pilgrim’s Pride and other meat producers are experiencing high costs due to skyrocketing prices for corn and soybean meal.
