New Diagnostic Services Announced
PAKISTAN - The government is to spend 132 million rupees (PKR) to set up new disease diagnostic laboratories in Punjab to provide modern veterinary support services to livestock farmers.Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad made the announcement to a delegation of livestock farmers on 3 August, reports Daily Times of Lahore.
Mr Riaz explained that the project would ensure complete coverage of diagnostic services at the district level.
The minister said that PKR1.9 million has been allocated in the current fiscal year for the livestock sector.
"Pakistan has great potential in this field as the national herd consists of 26.3 million buffaloes, 24.9 million sheep, 56.7 million goats and 0.8 million camels," he explained, adding that there is also a vibrant poultry sector in the country with annual production of more than 530 million birds.
The investment will upgrade 66 regional veterinary hospitals as well as 821 new veterinary dispensaries at the union council level and 76 mobile dispensaries.
