Egg Sales Boom, Industry Gets Boost

UK - Egg packers are reporting bumper sales following a series of boosts to the industry, with more than 300m eggs sold at retail in the last three weeks alone – 7 per cent more than the comparable period in 2008.

With Pancake Day - traditionally one of the biggest sales periods of the year - following the blanket media coverage for the end of restrictions on egg consumption, eggs have been flying off the shelves at record levels and the industry reports its best week for egg sales for many years.

Sales have been strong since the New Year as consumers turn to eggs as a low-cost protein source during the credit crunch, and the recent cold weather has further increased consumption.

Packers have reported a significant uplift in sales during the past two weeks following the news that the previous limits on consumption, linked to fears over cholesterol, have been lifted by health experts.

“The current exceptional demand for eggs is fantastic news for the industry,” said BEIC Chairman Andrew Parker. “After decades with the ’cholesterol cloud’ hanging over us, we now have a clean bill of heath on all fronts and it’s great to see that consumers are once again recognising the value of eggs, both nutritionally and economically.”
