Peru Reports Cases of ILT and ND to OIE
PERU - The Peruvian veterinary authorities have sent two reports to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) regarding outbreaks of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) and one about Newcastle disease (ND) in a backyard flock.

The veterinary authority in Peru sent an Immediate Notification to OIE on 21 April regarding an outbreak of ILT at Mejía in Arequipa, which is in the south of the country and on the coast. It started on 1 April. In total, 140,000 birds on a commercial farm were affected, of which 20,000 became ill and 4,800 died. The rest of the flock was destroyed.
Two days later, a Follow up Report was sent to OIE, describing another two cases of ILT, both of which started on 3 April. Both were at Chincha in Ica, which is also on the coast but further north than the first outbreak. The two farms had a total of 35,000 birds, of which 19,410 were affected and 1,410 died. None of the survivors is reported have been destroyed.
On 21 April, the authorities sent an Immediate Notification to OIE about a case of Newcastle disease, which started in February 2009 and was reportedly resolved in March. It involved a backyard flock at Tacna, the state that borders Chile. All the birds in the flock were destroyed.
