Poultry Company Closes Cutting Line
SCOTLAND, UK - The UK's largest poultry processing company, 2 Sisters, is to close its cutting line at its factory in Letham, near Forfar. The company is to move the cutting division to the West Midland in England, with the loss of 95 jobs.
The plant in Letham was part of the former family run Joseph Mitchell (Letham) Ltd.
A spokesman for 2 Sisters said: "After a thorough review of our UK operation, we will close our cutting division at Letham and transfer it to our central cutting facilities in the West Midlands. This will optimize our production efficiencies across the group and enable Letham to focus on primary production.
"These are challenging economic times and unfortunately we must take some difficult and unpopular decisions to ensure solid foundations for the development of our UK business.
"The downturn in the economy and changes in consumer demand have rendered the cutting division at our Scottish site uneconomical.
"We regret the need for these changes in our business and the redundancy of around 95 employees.
"The company will hold one to one meetings with all employees likely to be affected by redundancy during the next 30 days as part of the legal consultative process.
"The decision to release the employees is not in any way a reflection on the skill and dedication of the workforce."
The Letham plant currently employs 240 people and the company spokesman added that 2 Sisters plans to grow throughput at Letham in future as more farms come on line.
