USDA Chickens and Eggs Report - March 2010
US - US egg production totalled 7.8 billion during March, one per cent more than the same month last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Chickens and Eggs report for March 2010.

March egg production up one per cent
US egg production totalled 7.81 billion during March 2010, up one per cent from last year. Production included 6.71 billion table eggs, and 1.10 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.03 billion were broiler-type and 76 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during March 2010 averaged 341 million, up slightly from last year. March egg production per 100 layers was 2,292 eggs, up one per cent from March 2009.
All layers in the US on 1 April 2010 totalled 342 million, up slightly from last year. The 342 million layers consisted of 283 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 55.4 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.03 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on 1 April 2010, averaged 74.8 eggs per 100 layers, up one per cent from 1 April 2009.
Egg-type chicks hatched up eight per cent
Egg-type chicks hatched during March 2010 totalled 45.2 million, up eight per cent from March 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 42.9 million on 1 April 2010, up 14 per cent from a year ago.
Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totalled 260,000 during March 2010, down six per cent from March 2009.
Broiler-type chicks hatched up slightly
Broiler-type chicks hatched during March 2010 totalled 787 million, up slightly from March 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 640 million on 1 April 2010, up two per cent from a year earlier.
Leading breeders placed 6.61 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during March 2010, down two per cent from March 2009.
