Increase in Value of Poultry Meat

CANADA - The value of poultry meat sales in Canada reached C$2.6 billion in 2011, up 14.1 per cent from 2010, according to the latest figures to Statistics Canada.

Canadian farmers produced 1.2 million tonnes of poultry meat in 2011.

Chicken, including stewing hens, which accounts for 87 per cent of all poultry meat produced, is up by 0.4 per cent from 2010.

Turkey meat production stood at 160,000 tonnes in 2011, an increase of 0.4 per cent from the previous year.

The value of egg sales reached C$1024.8 million in 2011, an increase of 9.3 per cent compared to the previous year.

Egg production was 643.8 million dozen, an increase of one per cent from 2010.

The central region produces more than half of the eggs in Canada with Ontario producing 242.1 million dozen eggs and Quebec producing 113.8 million dozen eggs.
