Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting to Focus on Research Highlights

US - This year’s Poultry Science Association (PSA) annual meeting will bring together some of the world’s foremost experts in the field to present and discuss their latest findings in a range of areas critical to their respective scientific disciplines and to the poultry industry. The meeting will be held in San Diego from July 21-25.

“Poultry and eggs are and will continue to be a staple in the American diet. And with the global population rise, many countries are increasing poultry production to improve human nutrition and attain food security,” said Dr. Mike Kidd, PSA President and Director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science at the University of Arkansas.

“The PSA annual meeting is a venue where the world’s experts in poultry research present and discuss findings. The face-to-face exchange is a key component for research collaborations and synergies among poultry science experts. Research areas presented include behavior and well-being, nutrition, genetics, physiology, pathology, environmental management, endocrinology, reproduction, and processing. Dr. R. Jeff Buhr, Chairman of the PSA program, has put together an exceptional array of symposia which also includes topics such as computer modeling, nutritional interventions, food safety and genomics. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego,” added Dr. Kidd.

Based on preregistration numbers, PSA anticipates approximately 900 members will attend this year’s meeting.

Keynote Address and Symposia

This year’s keynote address is entitled “Modeling as a Research Tool in Poultry Science.” It will be delivered by Dr. Rob Gous, University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness. The keynote – officially known as the WPSA Lectureship – is sponsored by the U.S. branch of the World Poultry Science Association. The co-chairs for the WPSA-USA Lectureship will be M. J. Zuidhof, University of Alberta, and Robert E. Buresh, Novus International Inc.

In addition to the keynote, the meeting will feature the following eight symposia:

  • Informal Nutrition Symposium: “From Research Measurements to Application: Bridging the Gap” (Chair: Mamduh Sifri, Archer Daniels Midland Company)
  • “Possible substrates for exogenous enzymes” (Chair: Jose-Otavio Sorbara, DSM)
  • The National Extension Workshop: “Communications Options for Extension” (Co-chairs: F. Dustan Clark, Univ. of Arkansas, and Richard Reynnells, USDA CSREES)
  • “Fundamentals of Feed Efficiency – Animal to Genome” (Walter G. Bottje, University of Arkansas, and Sammy E. Aggrey, University of Georgia)
  • “Applying next generation sequencing to solve poultry problems” (Co-chairs: Robert Taylor, University of New Hampshire, and Christopher M. Ashwell, N. C. State University)
  • Student symposium:“The Global Importance of Poultry” (Co-chairs: Ms. Gretchen Nagel, Auburn University, and Ms. Kristen Byrne, University of Arkansas)
  • Opportunities for Poultry Scientists Worldwide Bernie Murphy, Jones-Hamilton Co.
  • Future of the Worldwide Poultry Industry Mario Penz, Nutron Alimentos
  • “Nutrient Requirement Evaluation and Publication for Poultry: US and Global Perspectives” (Chair: Todd J. Applegate, Purdue Univ.)
