New Highly Pathogenic Bird Flu Hits Hebei Farm

CHINA - Highly pathogenic avian influenza of a 'new' sub-type - H5N2 - has hit a farm in Hebei province.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 21 December to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a farm in the village of Zhuzhuang in Hebei province.

The outbreak started on 21 December, killing around 4,000 of the 129,700 birds on the farm.

The remaining birds have been destroyed and the usual control measures have been put in place .

This is the first occurrence of this virus subtype - H5N2 - in the country.
