Two Outbreaks of High-path Bird Flu in Vietnamese Poultry

VIET NAM - Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian flu of the H5N6 sub-type have been reported in central Viet Nam in August 2014.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No.2 dated 4 September to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report outlines two new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N6 sub-type in village flocks in central Viet Nam.

The first was at Xuan My in Quang Tri province. It started on 15 August and killed 350 birds of a flock of 1,550. The rest of the lfock was destroyed.

The second outbreak started on 23 August at Dong Nhon Nam in Quang Ngai province, where 200 birds died and the rest of the 1,110-bird flock has been destroyed.

The source of infection is unknown.

The following control measures are being applied: control of wildlife reservoirs; stamping out; movement control inside the country; screening and disinfection of infected premises/establishments. There is no vaccination or treatment of affected animals.
