German Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed as H5N8

GERMANY - The latest highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in turkeys on turkey farm in Lower Saxony has been confirmed as the H5N8 variant.

The cause of the latest outbreak high-path bird flu in the district of Cloppenburg in Lower Saxony has been confirmed as the H5N8 subtype, the same as previous recent outbreaks in Germany and other European countries.

According to the German veterinary authority in a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the outbreak started on 15 December in a flock of 17,887 fattening turkeys. In all, 4,088 were affected, 199 died and the rest of the flock has been culled and disposed of.
