249,490 Chickens Die in Taiwan Avian Influenza Outbreak

07 March 2016

TAIWAN - Five new outbreaks of Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) have been reported on poultry farms in Chinese Taipei.

In total, 249,490 chickens died as a result of the outbreaks.

Abnormal mortalities were observed in 5 poultry farms in Changhua County, Chiayi County and Pingtung County.

Samples were sent to the National Laboratory, the Animal Health Research Institute (AHRI) for diagnosis.

H5N2 subtype low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) was confirmed by AHRI. These farms were put under movement restrictions.

The pathogenicity of the virus was subsequently confirmed by the AHRI as low pathogenic (less than 75% mortality of the tested chickens) on 23 February 2016.

All animals on the infected farms were culled on 16, 18, 25 February and 6, 17 March 2015, respectively.

Thorough cleaning and disinfection were conducted after stamping out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within 3 km radius of the infected farms had been under intensified surveillance for 3 months.
