Consultation Opened on British Farming Post-Brexit

15 August 2016

UK - The National Farmers Union (NFU) has opened its largest consultation in a generation, to find out what members think is needed from a future domestic agricultural policy for the British farming sector post-Brexit.

The consultation period will end on 14 September 2016, after around 50 discussion meetings across the country.

NFU President Meurig Raymond said: “This is the chance to shape the future for our industry for all future generations of British farmers and growers.

“Nobody should be under any illusions that Brexit will happen in a matter of months. The process of leaving the EU and of creating a domestic agricultural policy will take time and that’s why the NFU has taken the opportunity to carry out this robust consultation.

"We want to ensure that when we present our vision for a new policy we can clearly demonstrate that this is what farmers and growers from all sectors and in all areas want and need."

Ahead of the British exit from the EU, the UK's Treasury announced that it will guarantee agricultural funding under pillar one of the Common Agricultural Policy until 2020, to give farmers certainty in the transfer to new domestic policy.

Environment Secretary, Andrea Leadsom said: "I'm delighted we can provide this crucial certainty and continuity to our rural communities while we develop a new approach to supporting agriculture and protecting our precious countryside."
