IPPE: DSM’s focus post-integration, new product launches

Raj Murugesan, Head of Global Poultry with DSM, shares DSM’s strategy for the future now that the DSM-Biomin integration is complete.

“Biomin is now integrated completely into DSM which brings us a lot of tools that we can offer to the poultry industry,” said Murugesan. “We are focusing on our strategies in terms of how we can help our customers. Basically, protecting the birds, making them perform better, and helping ensure our producers make a profit - protect, perform and profit - that's our plan going forward.”

To implement that, DSM is focused on several aspects of the industry:

Raw material utilization - feed costs are going up due to logistics and shipping. DSM is considering how to help producers utilize alternative raw materials as well as how to improve the utilization of those nutrients. DSM is working on new technologies with enzymes, phytases and protease, including launching two new solutions, HiPhorius and ProAct 360.

Optimum vitamin nutrition levels – it’s critical to meet an animal’s dietary requirements, so DSM is working in this area regarding energy, amino acids and vitamin nutrition.

Poultry health - necrotic enteritis and coccidiosis have become much bigger issues, especially with operations transitioning from conventional to non-antibiotic. DSM is helping customers with an all-in strategy to manage and prevent disease.

Food and feed safety – a lot of producers are looking into zero salmonella. DSM has efforts in place to help them to achieve zero salmonella in their flock. Mycotoxins also continue to be a significant concern, especially with raw material prices increasing. With the integration, DSM can now offer tools to assist with mycotoxins.

Regenerative sustainability and welfare – it’s important to safeguarding our flocks and how they are been raised while reducing phosphorus emissions. One of DSM’s key goals is their commitment to help reduce 30% of phosphorus emission from poultry production by 2030.

“These are the strategies that we are currently looking into, and with the integration, it has offered us a lot of tools to help support our customers to protect, perform and gain profit,” he said.

DSM offers next generation solutions

A newly launched solution is Symphiome, which is a pre“cision” biotic.

“We are moving from a generic way of working, which is typically how feed additives work, to a position-based system,” he explained. “As a microbiome modulator, Symphiome helps to direct your efforts toward one aspect or another very precisely, so it solves a particular problem.”

It is a next-generation molecule that helps shift the microbiome into sync. DSM treats the microbiome as an organ which helps control the outcome of the microbiome without having to worry about its individual components.

“In practice, we have focused on protein utilization in the hind gut, which can reduce the negative effects of protein not being effectively utilized,” Murugesan said. “Excess protein in the hind gut helps Clostridium to grow necrotic enteritis and increases ammonia emissions. Then litter quality goes down, and wet litter can lead to footpad dermatitis. Thus, protein realization is a key component – if the bird’s body is not utilizing the protein, then it goes out in the litter. This is where Symphiome comes in to help target the protein utilization and improve it, which can reduce ammonia emissions.”

Also launched at IPPE is HiPhorius, a fourth generation phytase, which enables producers to expect increased efficiency, improved thermostability and access to digital services, giving producers opportunities to reduce feed costs. The superior phytate-degrading properties of HiPhorius enable precision nutrition with the use of digestible calcium for optimum broiler performance.

The precision services group has also launched Verax, which tests the blood serum and looks at biomarkers to help determine the health of the flock. By harnessing the power of data, operations can get a deeper understanding of the overall health, productivity and welfare of their flock.

ProAct 360 is a cost-effective, low inclusion 2G next generation protease, which transforms the way that protein realization happens.

“Again, we offer many tools for the industry, and there’s a lot more to come,” he said.
