NFU announces Turkey hotline - UK - The NFU is urging farmers to sign up for the third annual Turkey Hotline, following its huge success in previous years.

The NFU Turkey Hotline is a dedicated number that allows turkey growers to promote their traditional festive fare directly to shoppers. Callers are provided with details of their nearest turkey farmer to help them buy a delicious, home-reared turkey for the most important meal of the year.

In 2002, the hotline received 1,400 calls, generating an extra income of £50,000 for the 114 farmers taking part, for a subscription of just £20.

The hotline is one aspect of a promotional campaign using various different media to target a wide and varied audience, in order to raise the profile of British turkey producers.

The campaign aims to enlighten the public about the positive production methods and high standards employed by British turkey producers.

NFU poultry commodity board chairman Charles Bourns said: “The Turkey Hotline has been a tremendous success the last two years and once again our objective is to encourage the public to buy British and buy locally, therefore supporting the local rural economy.

“We also want to send a message to the public that British turkey producers can provide a fresh, succulent showpiece of quality, not only for Christmas, but throughout the year.”
