Information received on 11 November 2003 from Dr Frederik H. Pluimers, Chief Veterinary Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries, The Hague:

Date of the report: 11 November 2003.

The last case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed on 23 May 2003, but the flock in question had already been culled on 17 April 2003.

The last infected flock was culled on 11 May 2003 (see details in Disease Information, 16 [40], 220, dated 3 October 2003).

Since the above-mentioned last infected flock, no other cases of HPAI have been recorded in the Netherlands. In accordance with Article 2.1.14.2 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, the Netherlands considers itself free from HPAI as from 11 November 2003.
