Get involved in the food chain

UK - In the brave new world of CAP reform farmers need to focus their business practices more on the market, according to Sion Roberts, chief exeuctive of English Food and Farming Partnerships.

Speaking at the NFU conference in Birmingham, Mr Roberts said that added value would be essential for UK farmers as they get more exposed to competition in the commodity market from low-cost producers worldwide.

And the concentration of power and the pressure exerted by players higher up in the UK food chain would make collaboration vital, Mr Roberts said.

He argued that the business-side of UK agriculture will have to change.

"The way UK farmers have done business over the last two generations is not going to be sufficient in the years ahead, as there will be increasing pressure to be able to create and capture more value."
