Local Vanuatu crops make good animal feed

VANUATU - Officers from the Livestock Section of the Vanuatu Quarantine and Inspection Service, for the first time learned that pigs and poultry that feed on local feeds (food crops) can yield the same result as those that feed on imported feeds.

The revelation was delivered to the officers during a one week training that was organized earlier this month at Tagabe Agriculture Station.

The training was organized and funded by the Livestock Section. The main purpose of bringing the officers from all over the country to Port Vila was to teach them how to formulate animal feed, especially pig and poultry feed using local food crops, so that they can go back and pass on the knowledge gained to farmers in the rural areas.

The week-long course was contacted by Mr Sandy Hoffman Mael. He is the only ni-Vanuatu available with the expertise to do so.

Mael graduated with Masters degree in Agriculture. His research work was done on animal feed, the socio-economics of use of local feed as compared to imported feed.
