Ministry Steps Up Chicken Price Watch

MALAYSIA - The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has stepped up checks on chicken prices following public complaints that broiler chickens are being sold above the ceiling price.

Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said some wholesalers have resorted to cut supply in a move to create an artificial shortage to sell chicken higher than the RM6 a kilo ceiling price sanctioned by the government.

He said 26 cases of wholesalers and retailers selling chicken at RM6.30 or RM6.50 a kilo were booked in spot checks conducted early last month.

"Of the total, 22 cases involved retailers and four wholesalers," he told reporters after visiting Wisma KFC here Friday.

Wholesalers' ceiling price to retailers for dressed chicken is RM5.40 a kilo.
