Some live-broiler traders said that in general, demand was higher but so too was stock of heavier birds of 2.5 kg up. Prices adjusted marginally to show a slight increase.
In the Jakarta and BOTABEK areas, farm-gate live broilers prices was up at Rp 7,700/kg (1/21) from Rp 7,100/kg the previous week.
A similar market situation were also seen in Surabaya (east Java) and Semarang (central Java) where broiler prices ended higher at Rp 6,300/kg, up from Rp 5,800/kg and Rp 5,600/kg respectively.
In Medan (north Sumatra) broilers were traded at Rp 1,000 higher from Rp 8,000/kg in the week ending Jan 13 to Rp 9,000/kg in the latest week (ending Jan 20). Both Jambi (central Sumatra) and Palembang (south Sumatra) also enjoyed higher prices, from Rp 8,700/kg and Rp 9,000/kg (1/13) to Rp 10,000/kg and 9,500/kg respectively.
Hopes were also up among some broiler producers that the next raising period might see costs of production declining due to lower prices of day-old-chicks. DOC prices are expected to fall from about Rp 2,000 a chick to only Rp 1,200. Yet producers are also concerned that lower DOC prices might lead to oversupply, as more chickens are raised than required.
Egg
Prices of egg commodities continued up, pushed higher on food safety concerns. Fear over the illegal use of dangerous preservatives in food had forced many to switch to eggs for protein.
In Jakarta, eggs were traded at Rp 8,500/kg in the week ending Jan 21, a slight increase from Rp 8,200/kg the previous week.
In Blitar (east Java), the main egg-producing area, prices rose to Rp 7,500/kg (1/20) from Rp 7,350/kg the previous week.
Palembang (south Sumatra) also saw higher egg prices, which rose from Rp 7,400/kg (1/13) to Rp 7,500(1/20).
Some egg producers in Palembang were also increasing trade with markets in Bengkulu, Jambi and Lubuk Linggau in Sumatra, to diminish reliance on Jakarta as their traditional market.
