Direct more funds to Malta's poultry industry, AD says

MALTA - More help should be directed towards the local poultry industry and producers should be helped to increase their production, according to Alternattiva Demokratika.

Spokesman Mark Causon said: “It is very worrying to note that funds which should have been allocated for the years 2004 and 2005 have not been used yet while the poultry industry is suffering with the consequence that a number of farms are considering closing down.”

He added that while AD believes that all poultry farms should be up to EU standards, the authorities should do their utmost to facilitate the procedures necessary for such farms to achieve these standards rather than create more bureaucracy which is hampering the poultry industry.

He also suggested that the government should encourage producers who opt to have free range and poultry farms running on organic farming principles to be given added support, since this will be a niche product produced from Malta which could attract more business opportunities for local produce.
