Company ramps up for safe poultry processing

VIETNAM - A local company announced Sunday it planned to build two modern duck processing facilities in southern Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh cities to streamline safe poultry production nationwide, reports Thanh Nien News.

The VND200 billion (US$12.5 million) slaughter houses are a part of a pilot plan to raise 1.5-2 million ducks in southern Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Tay Ninh provinces with a complete and secure cycle of breeding, housing and processing poultry, Huynh Gia Huynh De Company said.

The company would then buy poultry from households at VND19,000-20,000/kg (US$1.19-1.26).

Although the date for the start of the construction has not been set, this is the first large scale duck raising project licensed by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The project is to facilitate a consistent system of poultry production in Vietnam, which, together with several other Asian countries, has been hard hit by poultry diseases in recent years.

Last year the deadly bird flu raged through 44 cities and provinces, killing and leading to the forced cull of nearly 4.8 million poultry, or over 2 percent of the country's fowl population.
