Mammoth loss of Rs 12b to the poultry industry

INDIA - Bird Flu has taken a huge financial toll on the poultry sector, with losses estimated at nearly Rs 12.5 billion till date. Wholesale and retail sale of chicken have drastically plummeted.

Sindh and Punjab have incurred huge losses while the NWFP has recorded a loss of around Rs 60 million. Nearly 200,000 chickens have been culled at the affected farms following the outbreak.

Following the outbreak, an effective monitoring system has been instituted and all poultry farms are under strict vigilance. The government is also being requested for some sort of a relief package for the poultry industry and a fervent appeal to remove the ban on serving chicken at wedding functions.
