TANZANIA - The Tanzanian government has announced a total ban on imports of poultry and poultry products to help check against the threat of bird flu. The ban had to be exercised following reports that the disease had already been spotted in Sudan and Djibouti, according to Tanzanian Livestock Development Minister Shukuru Kawambwa. But the minister told local media on Wednesday after announcing the total ban that Tanzania was not under threat from bird flu unless its direct neighbors or trading partners had come under attack. Tanzania's trading partners include Nigeria, Niger, Egypt, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Sudan and Djibouti. The minister said that the country's total ban on poultry imports was imposed basing on scientific grounds recognized by the World Health Organization. Source: Peoples Daily Online
