Local rancher grows ostriches from eggs to 400-pound monsters

CALIFORNIA - There’s nothing quite like standing next to a 9-foot-tall, 400-pound bird.

The thrill seems mostly to have worn off for Mickey Holzman, the owner of Ostrich Growers Meat Company. At any given time, he keeps about three dozen of the towering avians on his 25-acre farm near Pajaro Dunes, so he’s as comfortable with ostriches as a beef rancher is with cattle.

But the reaction of visitors upon seeing more than 12,000 pounds of exotic poultry pecking around in the dirt within sight of Monterey Bay is usually about the same, Holzman said: “Those are some big birds.”
