Poultry Tax Cut Proposed In Bahamas

BAHAMAS - In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles among Bahamians, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham recently indicated that the government may consider lowering the duty on imported chicken and raising the duty on red meat as a means of encouraging Bahamians to eat healthier.

Prime Minister Ingraham, however, did not say how much the government may lower the duty by.

The local chicken farmer said the move may cause a lot of harm to the poultry industry in The Bahamas.

"We are overloaded right now with chickens because we’re having a big problem moving chicken at this time. There’s too much chicken imported into the country at this point already," said Kandy Pinder, co-proprietor of Abaco Big Bird Poultry Farm, one of the few remaining chicken farms in The Bahamas.
