The chicken farm row has come only a couple of months after a farmer dropped controversial plans for a 900-sow piggery in the wake of staunch opposition from residents in Pakenham and Great Barton.

The plans for the pig farm were shelved and similar concerns were raised over the separate application for a free range chicken farm for 12,000 birds on the borders of the two villages, near Bury St Edmunds.

Neighbours from the two villages expressed concerns about the potential smell blown across the top of the village by the prevailing wind and with the number of extra HGV journeys coming to and from the chicken sheds at Mere Farm, Pakenham.
