This is despite an announcement by the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations (FLFAM) of Malaysia that its nationwide price had gone down 30sen a kilogramme, beginning yesterday, according to Bernama.

Consumers Association of Sabah and Labuan (Cash) Datuk Patrick Sindu said, after going to the General Market here, he found that broiler chicken were still sold at RM4.70 per kg instead of RM4.40.

He said the traders claimed they were not informed and did not know of the decrease in price.

Mr Sindu said surveys by other Cash members at other markets in various districts here also found traders selling the chicken at the same price.

He was speaking to reporters after a meeting with Sandakan Municipal Council president James Wong here.

FLFAM chairman Kwei Yew Tong said the price of chicken dropped again after it was first announced last Thursday, due to a surplus of chicken in Peninsular Malaysia, following the economic downturn.

The price of farm chicken has dropped from RM3.30 to RM3 per kg, the wholesale price of live chicken from RM4 to RM3.70 per kg and retail price for live chicken from RM4.70 to 4.40 per kg.

The wholesale price of dressed chicken has dropped from RM4.70 to RM4.35 per kg while the retail price of dressed chicken with shank, head, liver and gizzard dropped from RM5.55 to RM5.20 per kg.

The retail price of dressed chicken without shank, head, liver and gizzard with the Veterinary Health Mark (VHM) certificate dropped from RM6.90 to 6.50 per kg while those without the VHM certificate has gone down from RM6.20 to RM5.80 per kg.

Sindu urged the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry to monitor the situation and take action on traders who did not reduce prices.
