Two More Cases of Bird Flu in Hong Kong

HONG KONG - The veterinary authorities have informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about two new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The Hong Kong veterinary authority sent Follow up Report No. 1 to the OIE dated 16 April 2009.

The report covers two new cases of HPAI at the island of Ping Chau. The first was a wild bird, found dead in mid-February, which was subsequently found to be infected with the H5N1 virus. The other case refers to two dead chickens found on 3 March.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
