The Irvine family, who have a 45-year association with the Cobb breed in Zimbabwe and central African countries, have formed the new business to focus on developing new markets as well as servicing their current customer base.

"With the success of our relationship with Cobb and our future growth projections, we are planning for the new company to take advantage of the huge potential for the breed particularly in west and southern African states," says Craig Irvine, director of Cobb Africa. "Feed costs are high and so the superior feed efficiency of the Cobb 500 holds great benefits for these countries."

Cobb Africa, which is based at Lonehill in South Africa, is responsible for sales in sub-Saharan Africa apart from South Africa itself where the breed already has a substantial market share.

Mr Murphy has been working for Alltech in Africa and the Middle East since graduating at the University of Natal in 2001 with a BSc in animal science. Initially based in Saudi Arabia and then Dubai, he developed sales across the Middle East and then in 2005 moved back to South Africa as national sales manager.

"We welcome the growth I'm sure Patrick will bring not only to our business but to that of our customers," says Mr Irvine. "With his extensive experience in sales and marketing in the African region and beyond, we look forward to many new additions to our Cobb family."
