BANGLADESH - Rush-hour traffic on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway was halted for over an hour yesterday as the members of Narsingdi district unit of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association blockaded the busy route to protest government decision to import eggs from India.

Some 5,000 poultry farmers and workers squatted on the highway near Belanagar from 11:30 am to past 1 pm, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

The poultry farmers also demanded lowering the price of poultry feeds and layers, reports Gulf Times.

They also brought out a procession and submitted a charter of demands to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association’s Narsingdi unit president Tajul Islam and general-secretary Hasanuzzaman Sarkar were leading the protest.

The government has cleared import of 30mn eggs from India to meet the high demand during Ramadan and Eid festival.
