Sweden Reports Newcastle Disease Outbreak

SWEDEN - The country's veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of Newcastle Disease, also known as Paramyxovirus 1.

An immediate notification was sent to the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) on 9 November 2009. The outbreak is reported to have occured in Skåne County.

The cause of the outbreak has still not been identified. A protection zone (3 km) and a surveillance zone (10 km) were put in place around the farm on 6 November.

The OIE has applied several measures to prevent the spread of the virus in the country.
